If you don’t choose Gretzky then you’re just a hater. And I hated Gretzky

If Mario was given the same protection by the league he would have destroyed all of Gretzky's records. He did what he did with Cancer and numerous back surgery while ending up with black and blue legs at the end of every game. And don't say the league didn't protect Gretzky I grew up with many players that played in the NHL and in the summer the NHL players would come back to Sarnia and play with us up and coming young players and we talked and drank many many beers together

and Mike Bossy was the greatest goal scorer of all time by far!!! 9 years in a row from the start of his career with 50+ goals. If he the medical help we do now he would would have gone on with 50+ goals for many many more years

At least Gretzky was tiny and had excuse not to play more physical.

Mind you he shouldn't have been as usually he was recovering from surgery or cancer. The team had somebody tie his skates his back was so bad. Imagine 160pts in 60games at the same time as going through everything he did. Mario only played important minutes. Gretzky usually played the last 5 minutes of every single game to put up unimportant points and try and stack up as much as they could. Players were told to lay off of Gretzky as it was good for the game and players knew that but it still made everything a joke as far as I am concerned. But that is all I have to say on this topic. I have argued enough of this topic in my life time and I good with what I know on it

I like hearing the debate. That’s the whole point of the site. Re-examining the past and debating it. I really wish I had more of an opportunity to see Mario play other than his later years.

I completely disagree with Cooker's assessment of Lemieux. His earlier years he played more like Gretzky, he had protectors playing with him, just not to the extent Wayne did. It's not that he sucked either, cuz he didn't... But I would've had a lot more respect for him if he'd actually played more a physical game at his size.

All time Goals per game leaders: 1. Mike Bossy - 0.762 2. Mario Lemieux - 0.754 3. Cy Denneny - 0.751 4. Cecil 'Babe' Dye - 0.746 5. Pavel Bure - 0.623 6. Alexander Ovechkin - 0.608 7. Wayne Gretzky - 0.601

and if Lemieux hadn't come back after the team went pretty much bankrupt his points per game was higher. He only came back because that was the only way he was going to get the millions of dollars the team owed him. To me the comparison isn't even close. Imagine Gretzky going through cancer and multiple back surgeries. The fact that the statistics are even close is amazing!!! I had a guy that I worked with for two years that was a huge Gretzky fan and he had season tickets to the Oilers for a few years and he even said Gretzky was on the ice for the last 5 minutes of almost every game even when the games were blowouts and nothing mattered. Do you think Lemieux could even afford to take that chance? Hell no, he would have been in an ice bath minutes before the game even ended

Gretzky has more assists than any other player has points. He’s the goat, nobody else is close, period.

You can throw around goats and ducks and anything you like. The best player to ever put on a pair of skates in NHL is and always will be Mario Lemieux!!!
