Not according to the record books. And I am glad all you kids that never got to watch him play have books to read about it, but it still doesn't change that Mario was by far the best player to ever play in NHL!!

That’s your opinion that’s apart of the minority of people. Gretzky holds the most NHL records and is the only player who has his number retired league wide.

They saved the league by protecting him so you better keep this savior thing going on forever

I get you’re a Pens fan but any argument you can make, there’s 10 more that can be made for why Gretzky is the GOAT. Get your head out of your ass.

I am not trying to derail this discussion in the least, but I take some degree of pride in that we all pretty much for certain agree the best hockey player in NHL history was a Canadian

It is all you panty waste kids that loved to watch the games with daddy while you were still in diapers. I sat down and talked with 4 or 5 players from the NHL at the time and what they were told with Gretzky was crazy but they had no choice or they would be sent to the minors. I grew up Dino Ciccarrelli, Shawn Burr, Mike Dark, Pat Verbeek, Paul Ysepart and a few more. I was at game that Gretzky played in as guest of the Detroit Red Wings. Gretzky is what he is only because the game needed him badly at the time. The game was falling appart. You kids can keep you head up Gretzky ass and that is fine that is what the league wants. You are very welcomed in Gretzky's with Special invite from the NHL!!!

I’m sorry but where are those stories now? If those guys were scared of being sent to the minors then why would they still be hiding it now? There’s 0 reports on that being true so for all we know that’s just bullshit made by you.

I don't have a problem with the league doing it. It is what it is. But yes sitting around with the players talking about this stuff wasn't surprising at all. If calling it bullshit helps you get to sleep tonight then go ahead we all need our sleep.

I can say I sit with players who have called Gretzky the greatest player of all time, doesn’t make my word any less true than yours. You have no actual evidence to back up your insane comments.

I would bet a million dollars that any player I talked to would still be very happy with what Gretzky brought to the game. They all made more money thanks to him. Every single one of them may have thought Gretzky was the greatest still. Maybe or maybe not. I know with Shawn Burr he always said Ray Sheppard had the best hands in hockey but other than that I have no idea. We did talk about Gretzky being protected and stuff like that as all of us kids at the time really wanted to know all the info we could get on stuff like that. Then the only other person I talked to was a Gretzky fan and season ticket holder that I worked with. My Gretzky hating days really started as a Mike Bossy fan and watching the Islanders win cup after cup after cup

Your hate for Gretzky was because he wasn’t a physical player like most guys were back then. He used his skill and his hockey IQ to outplay everybody on the ice. He was usually one of the smallest guys on the ice and still managed to do what he did with protectors or not.

He was usually one of the smallest guys on the ice and still managed to do what he did with protectors or not. No had nothing to do with that. I was even smaller trying to get drafted into Junior A. I would have loved to have been protected but unfortuntly the only thing holding me back from getting drafted was my size and they were worried I would get hurt, so my last year of midget got into fight after fight to prove they had nothing to worry about. Still didn't work lol. We had a guy on our team that was playing up from Minor Bantam but he was a very big kid and he played exactly like Gretzky behind the net. As far as hating Gretzkky it was more of a hating Edmonton thing. I loved Andy Moog though but mostly in his days in Boston. When Edmonton stopped the Islanders days there was my hate period. At that time Bossy was god to me. But when the whole Gretzky the greatest started I had to side with Lemieux for arguement sake. I met Bossy in a bar In Montreal when I was coaching the womens travel team at a tournament and totally forgot to get an autograph lol. And he was 6 feet tall 175lbs lol not even close to being the smallest guy on the ice. There would have been 10 guys on the ice in any game smaller than he was back then

6 feet and 175 pounds is like Marner. He was seen as scrawny which is why people would call him small.
Not to mention, you shouldn’t hate Gretzky for beating the Isles, it’s not his fault they were the better team lmao.
