Note: I am doing this so people can see how I review trades, breaking them down to see both points of view, because sometimes trades that get a "head turn" can get some critical feedback, so I figured it might be helpful to understand the Review process, especially when there's unfavorable reception from other members.A Reminder: we said when we changed the trade mod format that we are here to encourage enjoyment and fun and trades and trust in the GM to make decisions that improve their enjoyability in the site, and not deter that process. Pens is new though, so that is why I am thoroughly breaking this one down.
The "On Paper" ViewBourque and Muni have moderate years remaining, but also are low-end defensemen, which there are MANY on the site. Basically table scraps. Let's say they amount to 4 years of Mark Pederson.
Cullen 85, Gelinas 83, Boughner 79 and a 2nd for Corson 85, Svoboda 81 and Kurvers 82 =
82.3 overall average for
82.6 overall average. + 2nd going
way.
Cullen 9YR, Gelinas 18YR, Boughner 16YR for Corson 14YR, Svoboda 11YR, Kurvers 5YR =
43YR avg 14YR vs.
30YR, 10YR avg.
The Winner? In that theory, at MOST,
is giving up a 2nd round pick in a year that Pittsburgh is chasing down a President's Trophy, so very possibly the LAST pick in the draft, which could be fall UNDER the 80 overall range to upgrade his low-end defense for a run, but lose 13 years of active seasons.
Weighing the Top Players:24 Shayne Corson 85 F 14 YR
24 Petr Svoboda 81 D 11 YR
throw in of Kurvers 82 at 5 years
for
26 John Cullen 85 F 9 YR
20 Martin Gelinas 83 F 18 YR
2nd round pick
In this view, you look at Cullen with 9YR to an even swap at Corson to get 5 more years with the highest rated player in the trade:
wins.
Gelinas 83 at 18 YR and a 2nd round pick for Svoboda at 11 YR and Kurvers 5 YR = Gelinas, a third liner at best on Pittsburgh, gets swapped for two 80s range defensemen, one with over a decade left and one with 5 for a shortened window. Is the 5 years 82 = potentially worst pick in the draft? You could argue yes.
The Winner? gets the best player on paper with the longest contract.
also gets the 2 best defensemen in the trade at the cost of Gelinas' long-term value.

PIT 2nd 1991
In this scenario - the first time we're using stats this season in trade evaluations - we have two good teams trading away depth players. The 2 most productive point producers are Cullen and Gelinas. The next 3 and then a tie are all
players.
It could be argued that low-grade players like Muni and Bourque and Boughner would produce on a team stacked with high-skilled offense, just as the Blues would have with their own players behind the 2nd and 3rd highest goal scorers on the site (Brind'Amour and Oates).
This comes down to the Pens trading 64PTS for 48PTS.
Stats Winner:That's where the 2nd can also be criticized for being part of the package, from merely a "get rid of the add-in pick" point of view.
Where Do We Go From Here? It's important that we did all of this for one specific member:
Pittsburgh PenguinsBlues is a veteran player and is making a good "on paper trade" here, where his "borderline" evening up/advantage is a VERY low rated 2nd round pick.
It comes down, for me, as to whether
Pittsburgh Penguins still wants to do this trade after reading all of the above information and mostly taking the points into consideration. If the YR on Corson is worth the downgrade and the overall improvement of his defensive depth, then it goes back to the top point:
"We encourage enjoyment and fun and trades and trust in the GM to make decisions that improve their enjoyability in the site."
