SCOUTING REPORT5. Alexei Kovalev - Right Wing - Soviet Union - Dynamo Moscow (USSR)Alexei Kovalev is slated to became the first Russian-born player to be drafted in the first round in the history of the NHL as well as the first Soviet player to be drafted in the first round. He is best known for his incredible stick-handling skills, with many scouts referring to him as "the kid with the gifted hands." Kovalev is known to take some shifts off here and there, but might be "too talented for his own good," as one scout reported. At 6'2" and 220lbs, he has the size and weight to throw his body around, but moves incredibly slick for a big man. Alexei Kovalev is a world class stick- and puck-handler. Can easily beat defenders in tight space with his terrific one-on-one moves in combination with his great and smooth skill-set. PROS: He is an elegant skater. His wrist shot is hard and accurate and Alexei Kovalev has excellent vision and playmaking abilities.
