Every sim league seems to run into this problem and it becomes "stale" when it does.
Over saturation and too many good players.
Now, I realize we have guys retiring here and there but we are currently facing the dilemma of teams having 2-3 goalies who are all (realistically) starters based on their overall. Guys are having a top 9, nearing a top 12 of all players in the mid 80's and above. The D core, while not as appealing are going to go up as more defenceman are introduced into the game.
Why should we care?
Yes, those 78/79 players aren't great but they were still NHL'ers who probably played a half dozen or more seasons and got 10-20 points a year. They aren't great but teams still used them and they still played because teams didn't get stacked to the point that we're getting stacked. Same with the goalie situation. Very few teams ever had 2 starting goalies of near all-star calibre.
If we're trying to maintain some realism, then this needs to be addressed.
The other issue is, trading becomes stale. Nobody cares for those 78 or 79 or lower guys. Hell, the 80/81's are starting to lose any value. They become "add-ins" or unneccessary filler on team roster pages. A few of those guys go into the FA pool and that's it. I have players who haven't seen any NHL hockey for 2-3-4 seasons now because they're just too low.
Speaking of the FA pool, barely any bids on them anymore because they're useless now. In our first season, the bids were more plentiful because there was still a need. Not anymore.
As the seasons go by, we'll continue to have these issues.
The draft is another good example. We can't have some of those guys rated lower as people will complain that they are too low. They get boosted and we can continue to have this over saturation.
I propose expansion.
And I know why some were against it (our league doesn't have enough members).
BUT, these teams can be GM-Less and just sit there. We can add 2 teams. No Gm's, no trading with them UNTIL a GM comes along.
It would allow for a few guys to be poached off of everyone. It would give a few extra depth filler players a role to play in the league. They would stop being filler on roster pages.
I don't buy into the idea that we can't allow expansion because teams should keep players they want or like. Yes, I'd be kind of sad to lose a guy or two but we need to get over these half-mancrushes on players. Once teams start to gather too many players they like, they never move those guys and they get locked in. League activity goes down.
Consider it.
I didn't fully type this out in a well-thought out coherent manner but basically, I'm just worried that our depth players will never, ever have a role in this league and those 2nd rounders will become useless, if they aren't already.
