An early strike by St. Louis did nothing to deter the Capitals as they retaliated with 4 straight to close out the first period. Roenick opened the charge, Bure followed up and the Blues went to the locker room disheartened after the opening 20.
In the final 40 minutes, the Blues threw 23-17 shots on net, and drew the game within 2 goal with a strong and controlled second period. In the third, Hal Gill scored a sneaker from the point, and suddenly the game was open for business. Paul Kariya got on his high horse and pushed the Caps up one. With under 4 minutes to go, Roenick added the insurance marker to halt the Blues plans to pull their goaltender, and Marc Savard buried a dagger for good measure just over a minute later to put the Caps up 2-0.
Game 3 will see the teams head to St. Louis where they are hoping some home ice will help sway the series back.

Andreychuk follows up with his 2nd of the game for the insurance marker, and Robert Lang helps the Caps to feel good about themselves going into the intermission with a commanding 4-1 lead. A 3 goal spread. It would never get closer. Washington turned it into a trap game, leading to a 5-3 shot period for the third to coast into the win.
Andreychuk, Roenick and Lang take the three stars and the game pivots back to St. Louis. Can a team win on the road or will the Blues push this to 7th heaven?
