Here are some records that were not just broken but flat out shattered this season...
ISLES TOWER OF POWER
xx - Donald J. Trump built an entire American team and they have been a juggernaut for the past few years, but nothing compares to this...
Most Points in a Season:
Not only did Messier creep into the Top 10 with his 2nd appearance for most points, but Ron Francis, on a team expected to be on the decline, emerged with his best effort yet, topping S8s 136 points. And then there's the entire line of Hull/Sweeney/Guerin that absolutely blew my mind. 160 points alone is spectacular, but Hull nearly struck the 200 point mark, the first we've ever seen, with a 2.375 PPG pace for the year. Insane!
XX - Former Flyers - XX Winnipeg Jets
ROCKET RICHARD SHATTERED
Another absolutely ridiculous turn of events, we had 3 people that tied and/or broke Teemu Selanne's seasonal goal record of 65. It's now a ridiculous 71 goals, and may never again be beaten.
APPLES FOR DAYS
The assist record was formerly held by Bill Guerin's monstrous 90 assist season in S9, and he topped Doug Gilmour's S6 total of 87. Now, that record is likely never to be broken again. Brett Hull's gigantic season-crushing stats struck 124, even topping his linemate Sweeney by 23 additional apples.
SHORTHANDED MARIO
Mario Lemieux came very close to tying the Shorthanded Goals in a Single Season record of 6. He came up shy hitting 5 for the year. Here is who he was chasing (himself and Pivonka):
20 others with 4 SHG in a season tied for 10th
OTHER NOTABLES
Bob Sweeney and Keith Tkachuk hit 5 goals in a single game, coming 1 short of Ray Whitney's S9 record of 6 goals in a single game. They join the Mile 5 Club of Ray Ferraro, Bernie Nicholls, Pat LaFontaine and Geoff Sanderson.
Mike Ricci and Martin Havlat tied the "Most Points in a Single Game" Record of 7! Other prominant stars to share this record are Trevor Linden, Dave Andreychuk, Mario Lemieux, Jeremy Roenick, Doug Gilmour, Jari Kurri, Bill Guerin and Brendan Shanahan.
Jocelyn Thibault hit the top 5 for most saves in a single game with 50, Ed Belfour also joined the top ten with a 48 save effort. The record is currently held by S9 Jose Theodore with the Rangers (go figure) with 56 saves in a single game. Kiprusoff and Luongo round out the tie for 2nd with 51 saves.
Islanders slotted into 3rd all-time for most wins in a season, besting their S8 previous record of 60. Penguins slotted in tied for 5th... with themselves. Chicago holds the record with S9s 71 wins, with the Blues in 2nd with 65 wins in S9.
Rangers were almost as bad this year as they were last year. S9 Rangers holds the record for most losses in a season with 74. Minnesota's S9 season ranks 2nd with 68 losses, and the Rangers draw in again for 3rd with S10s 65 loss effort. Well done boys! One for the record books.
Despite a monstrous year of scoring, the record for most goals in a single season is strongly held by 4 teams in Season 6! S10 places 12th with Pittsburghs 480 goal season. Calgary holds the official record with their S6 532 goals, followed by Boston's 516 goals, Islanders 507 goals and St. Louis' 504 goals.
Islanders also hit a solid 14 game winning streak this season, marking 3rd all-time in that category. The Capitals hold 2nd place with 15 straight wins in Season 1. Chicago holds the record from their fairy-tale Season 9 record of... THIRTY-FUCKING-ONE.
Montreal hit 2nd place for 26 straight losses this season. They were just shy of the Rangers S9 record of FOURTY FUCKING LOSSES IN A ROW!
Let's see if we hit a new record this year by crowning our first ever potential double-Cup champions or if we see another brand new victory!
