IF that ends up staying a top 5 pick, I can see the gamble, but remember that it isn't the top 4 in each division for the playoffs, it's now a Conference 8.
So, the Capitals are technically OUT of the playoffs, because they are tied with the Islanders for the 8th spot but have a worse goals for/against differential.
Theoretically, if Hasek performs better than Vokoun for Washington, then that could improve the pick out of a bottom 5 lottery for Chara. That means the return would be substantially less than a number 1 goaltender and the potential of the top pick.
I REALLY want that to be known before a goaltender of this level of ELITE on the site is traded.
If you still want to take that gamble, then imo the deal is passable if the deal was locked down as a top 5 lottery pick.
But because it isn't locked down, it's a major gamble, and you might want another piece from Capitals, which would further weaken them in return and continue to keep it close to a top 5 consideration, or at the very least offset the potential weakened pick if their team gets better. That way you at least got something else decent in return if it falls out of the realm where you want that pick to end up.

I am fine with the belief that WAS will finish in the bottom 5. Hartford is a lock for one of them but right now after that last sim NYI are 15-15-0 WAS is 13-17-0 and MON is 11-18-0. I guess I am counting on Jagr and Lemieux to do the same fro him as they did for Jersey and Quebec. They have been a lock to miss

i don't think it's possible to overpay for one of the top goalies that will ever come into this league. Because of era overlaps, there are or will be a ton of 87+ goalies. I would be WAY more comfortable with this if Capitals added an additional, meaningful part to this as well.
Basically what we have is a franchise goalie for a starter and a pick in a shallow, front-loaded draft. Since the impact to Capitals roster is an immediate upgrade overall (meaning he is not losing at F or D to upgrade in G), there is no logical reason to believe this will make his team anything but better (and his pick worse).

Idk worse trades have been put through, I think we have kind of set a standard that anything is allowed so this trade shouldn't be adjusted.

I think everyone on this deal knows the risk/reward, and if they want to rework it, they are allowed to. We've had trades before where people stuck to their guns and they either did or did not go through, but the trade has been edited.
